Youth eBook
|
'The Youth Bible' is inviting in its readability and relevancy to daily living. This New Century Version (NCV) is a dynamic or functional equivalence translation that is easier to read than the NIV and despite some compromise in accuracy, it's not to the degree of others' and is appropriate to the format of being a devotional, rather than study Bible. That said, there are some key features to enhance studying, such as (1) concise book intros that include the book's purpose, historical context, map and timeline, and (2) dual purpose dictionary/topical index at the back. There are not, however, the potential distractions of copious verse-by-verse notes or cross-references, though there are some "For More, See..." verse citations in each of the devotional boxes. These devotional boxes are the notable feature of this Bible, and while targeted to teens, are suitable for adults interested in God's wisdom regarding life issues (for ex, Decision Making, Fear, Money, Rumors, Justice, Government, Popularity, Priorities, Non-Christians, Illness, Sexuality, Suffering, etc.).

I recently read this short novel and found myself thinking about some of the scenes days after finishing - always the sign of a great book. br / br /The main character, Ted LeClare (or "the boy" as he's frequently called throughout the book) gets in a gun accident with some friend/acquaintances and the book is about the fall out from this accident -- where one of the kids is shot and killed. br / br /One of the things I really liked about this novel was that it didn't hit you over the head with a gun position pro or con - the scenes where Ted has just gone hunting with his uncle and where they're cleaning and preparing the dear were great. I know nothing about hunting or guns but I loved reading the perspective of this working class new england family and their real and true history with guns. The locals (Ted's family included) clashed wonderfully with the new class of folks moving in to town and into the McMansions.

s the faith formation director of a small rural parish, I wear several hats and I recently inaugurated a middle school youth group for our pre-teens. How to get Catholic kids this age to read scripture? How to plan scripture-based programs on timely topics that pre-teens will engage in and that untrained volunteers and kids can lead? This Bible has filled those needs beautifully and then some. Within the Bible are 21 glossy sections, each focused on a timely topic (i.e., anger, peer pressure, responsibility) with scripture references, Church teaching and discussion questions.

Whatever Eliade's other qualifications, he isn't a novelist. I ordered this book after reading that Francis Coppola was impressed with it. The themes are certainly interesting, but I found it lifeless. At a minimum, I expected Eliade to bring more of his vast learning to bear. Maybe Coppola will do a better job.

I read this book hoping for more. It really is just a book about what youth ministry is like and it also throws some stuff in there about small churches. For me, most of what was said in the book was pretty obvious. So, while I say this wasn't the book for me, it would be a good purchase for someone completely new to ministry and at a small church.

I am not a football coach but rather a parent who bought this book to get some tips for teaching the fundamentals to my 8 year old who is just getting into football. However, I have coached baseball and soccer for many years and am familiar with coaching books and dvds. br / br /I think this book does a very solid job of laying out many key responsibilites and techniques of each position. The drills look applicable to real game situations which is important. Because it does cover all of the positions and special teams in one book, it is not extremely deep in each position, but that is expected. I would definately recommend this for new coaches or parents/players wanting to learn the keys to each position.

We have two boys that are playing basketball (grades 7 and 3)and this book really helped us understand the basic skills. Both offensive and defensive skills are shown clearly. If you are a parent thinking about coaching youth basketball this is the book for you! If you are just a parent that wants to understand grade school basketball this is the book for you too! After getting this book we now know what is happening on the court when our boys play, and it makes the game so much more enjoyable. The coaches like that we understand the game better and are not "coaching" from the bleachers too! Buy this book if you are at all interested in youth basketball...you will not be sorry that you did.

Lonergan's debut play, "This Is Our Youth" is an excellent exploration of the battles of (of course) youth, and, more specifically, the warzone that is male friendship. br / br /The play is set in the early 1980's, but the relationships between the three young characters here exist now just as they did then. br / br /This is, foremost, a relationship play. The plot itself is minimal and unimportant. What is important is how Dennis, Warren, and Jessica interact with each other. Lonergan demonstrates himself to be a wonderful observer as the interactions of each relationship in the play (Dennis/Warren, Warren/Jessica, Dennis/Jessica, Dennis/Various People on the Phone) are finely tuned and extremely truthful. br / br /Lonergan's dialogue is masterful.

I appreciate the focus of this book: seeking ways of leading youth toward Christian maturity, and not just seeking numbers of youth involvement. And yet, given some time to develop a family-based youth ministry, Mark establishes that numbers will not be lacking. I also appreciated the insight that too often, the more common foci of youth ministries actually fosters a consumer / entertainment mentality amoung the involved youth such that leading them toward maturity is eclipsed. I highly recommend this book
