Publishing Ebooks

From production values to content, this book disappointed on most every front. Poor typesetting, layout, and design reinforces amateurish reputation of self-publishing. Even the kerning of the word "publishing" on the cover feels like the work of a novice. Content feels very padded out, with 30 or so pages simply listing self-published titles that were supposedly "good sellers" on Amazon.com. The "heart" of the book--consisting mostly of two page reviews of around 30 "self Publishing firms"-- feels fairly anemic, with some details already out of date. The rest of the book (how to title your book to make it "marketable," etc.) were too brief to be of much good to anybody but the rankest of amateurs. I was hoping for so much more for [...], especially with all of the five-star reviews, which now look a little dubious to me...

This book is full of info for almost every aspect of publishing and finding a literary agent. It covers more subjects than any other book I read, but it could go into a little more detail with some of them.If the chapter on proposals and query letters had more examples, it would have been a little more helpful. Their was a lot of information on marketing and publicity. I'm overall very pleased with this book, I learned enough in it to consider it a good purchase, and it will be another one I refer to often. br / br /It is an important part of a writer's personal collection. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get published along with Michael Larsen's "How to Get a Literary Agent", and "Give em What they Want" by Blythe Cameson for good examples of query letters. br / br /These three books are a good start for the fiction writer

At first this book was a bit over my head. Being a dummy, I should have started with a dummy guide, because the author assumes that you know something about computers. But after I had deciphered enough of the jargon, I succeeded in laying out my book, to my amazement, and Perfect Pages was a valuable stepping stone. It helped me to understand my WORD manual. I changed my type fonts because of this book. I've even had compliments on my layout! br / br /If you are a novice, as I was, you will need several manuals to lay out your book. If you are using WORD, make this one of them.

Peter Bowerman has done it again, creating a great resource for writers who want to keep as much of their hard-earned money as possible. This time he's geared it toward book writers: if you plan to write a book, buy this book. br /Through the pages of The Well-Fed Self Publisher, Peter guides you step-by-step with wit and humor, and with YOUR best interest at heart. He's published, all the while calling the shots, and he wants you to have the same control with your book. br /As the world grows more aware that self-publishing is no longer a vanity move by second-rate writers, the stigma is lifting, and book writers are now being congratulated as entreprenurial for self-publishing. Unfortunately for large publishing houses, writers these days are smart, and not willing to let others guide their destiny or skim off the top of their hard work. br /This book is easy to understand, fun to read and available in book form, or PDF for immediate download! Buy it...you won't regret it.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book right now, and I am pleased with it so far. I'm pretty familiar with computers and the Internet already, but the authors include enough information for beginniers to get a good grasp on the terminology early on. br / br /The book breaks down the material into 21 lessons, implying that each one should take one hour per day. A word of warning:

found this book marginally helpful. I think it is very interesting that a book on publishing Kindle books is so riddled with typographic errors and so horribly formatted. The author insists that you review and edit your material until it is perfect. Too bad he didn't take his own advice. Think about it; a book on publishing Kindle books and it doesn't contain a Cover image nor a Table of Contents, nor is it visually appealing. The paragraphs seem to run together without indentation or extra spacing between them. This book was obviously written by an amateur when it comes to documentation style. It is perhaps worth 99 cents, but not $9.99.

I picked up Aaron Shepard's book because the review ratings were high and numerous. The book did not disappoint. br / br /The book's key value is showing the reader places and parts of Amazon that are nearly impossible to find on your own. Numerous tools and pages are listed that serve as handy shortcuts to getting your book exposed. He gives tips on graphic sizing, uploading files for use later in blogs, tagging, soliciting reviews, etc. The companion tool on the web, salesrankexpress, is also useful for understanding how your book is positioned. br / br /I recommend this book to anybody wanting to self-publish, but who is befuddled by the pieces and parts of Amazon that are buried and hidden. Aiming at Amazon makes much of this process far easier.

The reality is that lots of graphic designers don't have formal design training, which can result in a problematic lack of production and printing knowledge. This book is easy to read (in a day), thoughtfully illustratrated, and covers the most important productino and printing issues that a designer should be aware of. br / br /The book is really good about inustructing the designer on what they should know and then giving the reader a list of questions/issues to discuss with their printer when the matter is outside the domain of the designer. Great stuff!
