It's always hard to figure out which search engine to use when you're trying to find information on the Web. Hock's book does a great job at sorting out the strengths and weaknesses of each of the major search engines, as well as providing easy-to-read documentation of features such as phrase searching and searching for personal names. I especially liked the sections on "What Happens Behind the Scenes" and "Special Options," which show where each search engine excels. Any serious Net.searcher should have this book within arm's reach.

Web Dragons: Inside the Myths of Search Engine Technology explains everything you want to know about search engines (the so called "web dragons") and how they work. Before reading the book, you perhaps wonder why Witten and co-authors called search engines "web dragons". After reading the book, I'm sure you will understand why. Search engines are guardians of the world information and their power is formidable. br / br /The approach is descriptive and historical rather than technical. Thus, the book is intended to a wide audience: people working with data, librarians, webmasters, but also search engine users who wants to know more about the tool they use everyday. The first author, Ian Witten, is involved in the data mining field (see for example the famous book Data Mining (Witten and Frank, 2005). The book thus makes many allusions to data mining applications.

Unfortunately, there is no "one size fits all" rule here. This process will requires constant reassessment. At some point, most of your online publishing efforts will be converted to free content. br / br /Don't become disheartened. This is a review of the audio CD version of "They Made America," by Harold Evans. The audio CD version is a severely abridged version of the book. That by itself isn't necessarily a fatal flaw of the audio book; it's just that some questionable chapters that could have easily been left out of the abridged edition and probably should have never been in the unabridged edition in the first place, were left in the abridged audio CD edition, to its disadvantage. This is unfortunate because excluding those forgettable chapters would have freed up space for some really good chapters that were left out of the abridged audio version. br / br /For example, the chapters on Ruth Handler (inventor of the Barbie Doll), Sarah Breedlove Walker (inventor of some hair care products), and Ida Rosenthal (inventor of the Maidenform Bra), could have -- should have -- been left out of all editions. br / br /One American woman that I was disappointed not to see a chapter on was Rear Admiral (Dr.) Grace Murray Hopper, who developed the first compiler, helped program the UNIVAC, helped develop COBOL, and did other pioneering work in computer science in the military, government and industry for 60 years. For her many accomplishments, which, in their own way, helped make America, she was the first woman to receive The National Medal of Technology.

If you are a beginner and want one book which is short and easy to understand, I would highly recommend this book. br / br /The author has highlighted many common mistakes which are done by highly paid webmasters and designers in the past on millions of websites. br / br /In the first part of this book author has explained various terms which are most commonly used in the field of Search engine optimization (SEO), many with the help of photos. br / br /In the second part of the book author has presented 7 step-plan for search engine optimization, step by step along with lots of practical examples and photos. 7 steps explained are the most crucial ones for the search engines optimization. Highly recommended for beginners!
