what this little book does very nicely is make great poetry very accessible. The format is designed with 'young' people in mind, however I left my copy on a shelf during a recent family gathering and it was my 40 year old daughter who picked it up and without referring to her own children picked out her favourite poem. br / br /This is a book for everyone, if you don't already know, Emily Dickinson is one of the explorers of human nature, and every other form of nature. br / br /Finally, my favourite poem is Revery.

I was excited when my Poetry Speaks arrived in the mail. Who wouldn't want to hear the voices of their favorite poets reading their original works of literature aloud? Unfortunately, how I envisioned the readings, did not come into fruition. The recordings were scratchy, almost as if Thomas Edison was reading his phonograph rendition of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" for the very first time. With today's technology, surely something can be done to clean up these recordings. The poetry itself earns an "A" while the recordings a "C-".

I read this book, cover to cover, slowly, a few poems at a time. Most of the work is post-modern and/or language poetry. I found the intuitive leaps to be confusing and truly made little sense of much of the work. About ten percent, I enjoyed. I also enjoyed the brief biographies given for each poet. This is not to say that this is not an excellent book and a good representation of its particular genre. It is simply not to my taste.

I homeschool my 12-year old son and it was difficult finding anything on line about poetry. This book covers couplets, triplets, quatrains, cinquains, haiku, limericks, shape poems and acrostics. It has plenty of template pages and we have both enjoyed working from this book. I wish I had reproduced the pages before we used them, as you could write different types of poems on each of the templates. I would highly recommend this book if you want to cover basic poetry.

This book is definitely an inspirational book that can be passed down from generation to generation, teaching children and adults on how "Hip Hop" is a celebration of poetry! I truly enjoyed the colorful diverse illustrations in this book and listening to the audio CD that incorporates Hip Hop, Jazz and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's " I had a dream" speech. This is an excellent resource for any child to look back into history and learn how "Hip Hop" has changed our music generation.

Wow! I have been trying to introduce poetry to my boys since they were toddlers and the only feedback I ever received was blank stares - maybe it was my reading style. But, for some reason, they just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this CD. We listen to it in the car and fight over which poem we listen to first. Some of our favorites are The Pied Piper, Thomas' Do Not Go Gently into that Good Night, the limericks (I was a bit worried when it started with There was an old man from Nantucket. . . . - but it is actually the children's version, obviously) and Kit Marlowe's The Passionate Shepard to His Love. My 8 year old has several of the classics almost memorized. br / br /Our only complaint is the reading of Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky. It is somewhat flat and not at all as exciting as it could be. br / br /Nonetheless, it is a great, rich, collection of beautiful poetry that your kids will enjoy. It truly is one of our favorites.

A required textbook for a poetry class, The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Poetry is a flawed but satisfying anthology that is a great pick up for new readers and students to the world of poetry. Seventy-five poets are featured in the anthology, including mainstays and well-knowns like Sylvia Plath, Allen Ginsberg, Anne Sexton, Adrienne Rich, Sharon Olds, Robert Pinsky, Mark Doty, and Yusef Komunyakaa among others. Editor J.D. McClatchy provides a short biography of each poet to go along with a handful of poems (usually six or seven) that differ in the length of a quarter page to several.

This is a very beautiful book to share with one's family. The poetry is a very enjoyable collection well worth the investment, but the illustration is what makes this book so wonderful! I have enjoyed reading this with my girls, and will continue to enjoy it for many years to come! Terrific!

Whether you are an avid reader of poetry looking to explore your gift, or are already a budding poet, Kooser provides much good and useful advice. Do not think that this is a kit of parts that you'll assemble and create great poetry. Instead, _The_Poetry_Home_Repair_Manual_ seeks to teach you to become a poet. You will learn how to look at the world and _see_ it. You will learn how to effectively assemble and present your experiences and thoughts, and then go back and revise them. br / br /What surprised me was that he even discusses getting published and what kinds of journals, periodicals, etc, you might consider. Throughout, you are reminded that you should write poetry not for notoriety, nor for money, nor for any other reason than to please yourself and fulfill an inner desire to express your soul. If you seek to be a poet for any other reason, you will be disappointed. br / br /Myself, being a poet in the nebulous space between novice and intermediate,
