As someone who has a large garden and works at preserving the harvest, I really appreciate these alternative techniques. Many of the recipes are more healthful and quicker than canning and don't require heating up your kitchen on a hot August day. The lacto-fermented recipes alone make the book worth purchasing. An excellent companion to Sally Fallon's classic: "Nourishing Traditions."

I first encountered The Art of Simple Food in early December, 2007. I immediately connected with the book's philosophy which is illustrated by nine fundamental guidelines: eat locally and sustainably, eat seasonally, shop at farmers' markets, plant a garden, conserve compost and recycle, cook simply, cook together, eat together, and remember that food is precious. I was thrilled with the principals, and being a novice cook, I was also encouraged by the idea of simple cooking. br / br /In The Art of Simple Food, Waters has outlined the fundamentals of cooking well. The first half of the book is filled with lessons that range from the foundations of stocking a working pantry, to making a perfect omelet, to executing a flawless risotto.

I have fibromyalgia and got tired of doctors experimenting on me with drugs and other substances. The nutrition information out there is highly contradictory, and I wanted to find a way to eat and to live that would make me feel better but also be practical to do and make sense. br / br /Pitchford presents his material in a logical and mostly easy-to-understand way. Drawing from Asian traditions (mostly Chinese medicine but also Ayervedic) with a wealth of supporting Western research, he goes from general to specific so that both those without medical training and those with can make good use of the book. It's far more than just "eat less refined food."

Ellie Krieger's book is so inspiring! We have always cooked healthy at home, but it's nice to get fresh ideas on easy ingredient and yummy result. br /I love a cookbook with photos; this book is surely full of visuals. It also gives us the break down of nutritional information, it's great to learn about the things that we put into our body. br /I can't find anything negative about this book. In fact, I am now looking at the Garlic fries page.... gotta go.

This book is easy to read and understand and full of information that we all should understand about the food we're eating. Biggest surprises for me were the egg, soy and milk findings. Don't believe everything you hear about what's good and what's not until you read this book. Really valuable information.

This is a reference book, similar to a dictionary. Each entry is a cooking/food term and the definition/description is generally a pretty thorough explanation. Spanish terms don't get the same coverage as French or Italian, but this must be one of the most complete culinary references. br / br /I have had the Food Lover's Companion for about a month and have referred to it nearly every time I cook. br / br /All in all, a wonderful reference book, and a great value.

I find that there is a bit of misinformation on some things. Some recipes indicate ingredients need to be cooked which makes the food not entirely raw.I was sort of disappointed in his book.I have read better, and have many in my library. This is a good one to have though. There are many wonderful recipes and tips for the beginer on the road to Raw....

I will admit, I learned a lot from this book and so glad that my family is already eating a vegan whole food high raw lifestyle. I am appalled at a lot of this as I know from working in fast food restaurants in the 80's that much of this is true. I worked at AW where lots of drug smuggling was going on and the place was finally shut down...Burger King and all the teens working there...we stayed up late hours working many dangerous jobs.

The book is easy to read and understand . It makes really good sense . A lot of the info you have heard of in different books but this one brings it together. I would of liked a little more info on the different foods listed in the different catigories. A more complete lists of quick exit foods and the right combinations .
