This book does a nice job of explaining the beginnings of what we now call "international political economy," but it's difficult to follow at times. In order to understand much of the book, you need an understanding of various economic theories, and the book, though it tries to explain some basic concepts, still relies heavily on terms that may not be clear to someone who is not familiar with economics and economic theory. Aside from that, however, the book is pretty clearly written.

This is definitely the best introductory book there is on the subject. This was a supplemental book for an undergraduate class of mine, but I read it anyway. The authors lucid writing allows this book to be thoroughly understood by all readers despite their backround in economics. I truly believe that this book should be required reading for all history, political science, finance, sociology, and economics majors. br / br /Unlike most books on the history of anything, this book starts from the beginning. The authors start off discussing explorers and empires and then go into colonization. Extremely informative on the economics of different regions in colonial America and the Industrial Revolution.

I am a college student and for some reason, all colleges and schools seem to think that we love to take out loans and just pay them money for tution or books, but this was a really good alternative than my college bookstore. I got a brand new book for the price of a used book which is awesome. I highly recommmend it!

I had to get this book for a graduate level class. This book is poorly written. After reading it, I have to believe there is a better way to explain economics. If you do not have a foundation in calculus, you will have problems with the way the math is explained. There are appendix sections that attempt to explain derivatives and linear regression. I would suspect those without some higher math experience may have found this confusing. To make matters worse, the author kept changing some of the acronyms. If there is an 'industry standard' for terminology, I could not tell. From chapter to chapter, there seemed to be little continuity for the terminology. The graphs are very confusing and all of it is in black white. Many of the definitions are written in language that did not define the term. Some terms were not defined at all only be an example. br / br /Two pros: The information is current. Not as current as some internet information but decent. The 'Case' examples and studies are good. They are real-world examples of some applications of concepts. br / br /Needed in the book: br /Adding some color to highlight information may help. br /Better examples of the mathematics. br /More answers to understand the solutions. br /Continuity for acronyms and terminology. br /Simplify! The book makes it harder than it actually is. There is a lot of good information in the book. It is explained poorly.

One of those brilliant works that takes explanations we take for granted and demolishes them just by looking at them with fresh eyes. For example, Jacobs turned the usual prehistorical explanation of agriculture and urbanism upside-down. According to Jacobs, cities predated agriculture. Agriculture could not have happened without a city somewhere. After persuasively demonstrating how that had to be the case, Jacobs uses the concept of "new work" and import replacement arising in pre-neolithic urban settlements to trace the whole history of urban life from Catal Huyuk 10,000 years ago to Los Angeles and Tokyo in the 20th century.

First banks started to wobble, then the stock market crashed. Can it be...a coming recession? If so, what could be better timed than a book on how to live well during a down time. br / br /The entire book is an organized plan with how to deal with a recession. First, Barr has you assess your current net worth and shows how to live on a budget. The next section deals with how to get more money: get a better raise, or find a better job, for example. br / br /It's the middle section that deals with how to keep your personal finances in good order and learn to live frugally that most people will find handy.

Undisputedly, this is the most comprehensive and accessible text on the subject. David Balaam and Michael Veseth have created a resource that is easy to understand without sacrificing the quality of the content. Introduction to International Political Economy is a thorough analysis of our modern world using the instruments of economics, politics, and sociology. Always engaging and insightful, this overview of our international community provides the reader with a foundation on which to develop their understanding of global current events.

The reviews by BookwormJDC and P.Murray are on target. They give some excellent examples from the book. br / br /Let me help answer the question that I always want to get out of these reviews: "Should I read this book?" br / br /If you are going to a dinner party hosted by Al Franken or Michael Moore, or need to win favor, respect or envy from anyone on the far left, get this book. Everything that is wrong with America, Capitalism and Free Trade is explained in charts, cartoons and talking points. You will look like a genius as you expound on the ills of the world over a glass of California wine. br / br /It reads like a college term paper (Doesn't rise anywhere near the level of thesis.). There are a plethora of facts, all of which support the theme. It's easy to read and the authors do a good job of staying on point.
