Duncan was the creator of Apache Tomcat and Apache Ant and was instrumental in their donation to the Apache Software Foundation by Sun Microsystems . While working at Sun, he authored two versions of the Java Servlet API specification as well as the Java API for XML Processing. I bought this thinking it might help me fill a few of the gaps in my knowledge of OS X administration. Granted, this is called "basics", but it is meant to be *administration* basics, not Mac OS X User Basics or what have you.pTake, for example, the discussion of the root account. The book says, "The owner is automatically given root user access to deal with when using the command line or any Darwin or UNIX issues, as well as an administrator account for the purposes of administering OS X."pIgnore the language mired in ambiguity,

I got this book as someone who had used UNIX before, but this was many years ago, and I had forgotten a lot. This book is great for picking up the functionalities of various UNIX tools - the explanations are clear and concise. It also works very well as a quick reference. The bulk of the book is devoted to bringing you up from a potentially zero-experience user to someone who can work with ease with editors, shells, and more. Simple examples are included throughout. The back of the book has a 250-page command reference section for quickly looking up how to use a particular command. You could read the whole book and progressively work with UNIX as a self-taught course, or just reference the sections you need.

I can't overstate my satisfaction with this book. This is a wealth of information that is presented in a clear and easy to follow manner. Working in the IT industry, it is important to keep up on developments (as they occur daily). For Leopard security, this is THE BOOK to have.

How to Do Everything with Mac OS X Tiger / Kirk McElhearn

I found Kate BInder's book on OS X Leopard just great because it is clear-cut, direct to the point and succinct. It helps me out at every turn when I tend to mess up. Any ding-dong can follow the instructions and succeed working on the Mac.
