I started my server with this book and the man pages that it suggested helped a little. It does not have the heavier network admin information that you need once you get running. If you are trying to configure multiple nic's, sendmail, web hosting or any of the standard things, you need to get something else. But if you want to set up a basic network, this is the best starter book i have used.

I was introduced to Linux back in 1995 and the distro was Slackware. It was tough going back in those days, had to set up everything manually. I learned to love Linux and several of the distros that followed (Redhat, Suse, Caldera, etc) but I've always kept Slackware as my workhorse distro. If you have a question about Linux, ask a Slackware user.

While SLfD is easy to follow when you have all the popular devices and cards, it doesn't leave room to explain how to overcome problems during installation. Ie, devices (printers) or cards (sound) not being recognized. There is a page or 2 in the back that says where to check the compatibility lists. By then is way too late, you've either given up or did some research, fixed the problem yourself.p I did the latter for my video card, sound card and printer and by then I no longer required the book.

The Slackware Linux operating system is a powerful platform for Intel-based computers. It is designed to be stable, secure, and functional as both a high-end server and powerful workstation.
This book is designed to get you started with the Slackware Linux operating system. It’s not meant to cover every single aspect of the distribution, but rather to show what it is capable of and give you a basic working knowledge of the system.
As you gain experience with Slackware Linux, we hope you find this book to be a handy reference. We also hope you’ll lend it to all of your friends when they come asking about that cool Slackware Linux operating system you’re running.
While this book may not an edge-of-your-seat novel, we certainly tried to make it as entertaining as possible. With any luck, we’ll get a movie deal. Of course, we also hope you are able to learn from it and find it useful.
