When I ordered this book, I planned to give it to my little brother in the hopes of interesting him in the delightful world of hardware hacking. I didn't expect it to contain anything I hadn't picked up doing EM research for MIT, or engineering research for the Air Force. However, the things in the book were surprisingly advanced, even for people with experience. There are many excellent ways to kill time in here, and they can even turn out to be useful. They are explained clearly and presented without being intimidating, which makes it perfect for the motivated beginner as well. If you have the basic equipment and the drive, this book is great for you!

This book was the required text for a class or I would not have purchased it. It is poorly organized and poorly written. The author provides an annoying amount of superfluous commentary and makes unnecessary digressions, both of which obscure the points he must be trying to make, and the content is sometimes repetitious. Finally, the book contains grammatical errors and the text includes what must surely be editorial content such as "stet" and "the acronym is the name", rendering some sentences unintelligible. Most books have their faults, but this one has too many to make it a worthwhile purchase; there are better texts which cover the same material.

This textbook was required for my coursework at a local college. I'm sorry to say although very well done in some respects, it is marred by many careless errors. br / br /These include: several screenshot pictures with extra characters between each word, areas where the text was not proof-read and is misplaced or otherwise not intelligable, some outright errors such as on page 245 where she misidentifies when a certain type of cable was launched (a test question), book quizzes without any answers provided let alone reasons for the answer, and class tests from the author with several mistakes and no explanations for any of the questions. A book CD that does not contain nearly what it's said to contain. br / br /The book does have many good points. The illustrations are often very good. Some of the analogies and explanations are very clear.

This is a text book, complete with review questions, vocab, and labs. There is also an associated lab workbook which is available from the publisher. br /I found reading this book to be extremely easy. It has a lot of diagrams, perhaps a few too many, but they illustrate the principles. Each key term is explained and also has the definition in the margin. There are highlights to know concerning the A+ exam, plus a few sample questions in each chapter. br /Each chapter also has a simple "lab" section with some real computer excercise to perform. br /My only question is whether this book is enough. I can't say. Likely, no single source is enough, especially without hands on experience. br /I also question if it is not time for a new edition given this one was published in June 2004. br /Also Roberts textbook on Networking Fundamentals is similar in format and readibility.

I really liked this book. It was very informative. Although published by HP Press, the book talks extensively about other Unix platforms as well as NT. The book is probably one year old by now, but I still recommend it. The authors cover almost every hardware option you can think of. A must read for any IT person planning an SAP Implementation.
