I finished reading this book and was very impressed with the candidness and knowledge of the author. br / br /When I finished the chapter on the head, at first I was a little disappointed because it did not go into any great detail. But at the end of that chapter he explained why. His whole philosophy is to not get caught up in the standard way of drawing. Many of us look for that "cookie cutter" type of tutorial lessons. His thing is use your eyes to draw.

This book is a great addition to the student of drawing's library. The author does a superb job of analyze some excellent examples of classical drawing and elucidates the formal and structural concepts in each. Although this book does not provide very much in the way of "step by step" style technical instruction, it does provide the reader with a way of conceptually approaching a drawing. br / br / The author demonstrates where the great artist used a cylinder, or a sphere to conceptualize a part of the subject's anatomy. He shows how lines are modulated to give varying degrees of tone and shape to the figure. Many of these ideas will stew around in your head as you approach your own drawing projects. Eventually, you will notice that you are more aware of certain parts of the form and that these are being incorporated into your work. Overall, this book is a very interesting and enjoyable way of delivering basic drawing concepts to a student reader.

I am using this book in a life drawing class. The step by step guidelines using the 'envelope' technique with blocking in has really improved students understanding of proportion. Beautiful renderings of the figure.

This a great book for the basics of how to create Construction Drawings. It has everything you could have questions about as an Interior Designer learning how to create Documentation for a project. I highly recommend this book. It lays everything out in an easy to understand format and has great pictorial examples.

I purchased this art book for my 12 year old granddaughter. She was doing some very nice sketching but did not know any of the techniques that you need for shading, etc. She was thrilled with this book and spent a couple of hours on Christmas day drawing from it. She is homeschooled and will use it weekly for art class.

My daughter brought home two of Ed Emberley's drawing books from the school library. br / br /She immediately began to draw little cartoons and towns and people using the books as guides to her work. br / br /When she showed me her work I was amazed and quite tickled to see how well she had done. br / br /She was totally into these books for the time period that she had them. When I looked on Amazon to see if they were something stocked (the books from the libary were quite old and well worn) I was pleasantly suprised to see that they are still sold and in paperback form no less. br / br /For the price that Amazon had them at, the 4 for 3 promotion that was applied, and the sheer joy of my 10 year old daughter, I had to order four of them. br / br /As far as drawing books go, she has never been so pleased. br / br /They are well worth the investment as your child will be provided with hours of entertainment if drawing is one of their favorite activities. br / br /Highly recommended!

I used this book 3 years ago with a group of teachers who were interested in improving their art instruction. We found that it vastly improved our own drawing skills. I like that the specific instructions for drawing techniques really helped my students (grade 3 to 5) to express themselves through their drawing in a very satisfying way!

If you want to learn how to draw, this is the book for you. Drawing is a learned skill and it takes determination, time and effort... The reason I like this book is that it not only teaches the fundamentals, but shows the techniques used to get a variety of results. Drawings and sketches of some of the worlds most noted artists are spattered throughout... showing even 'they' had to learn how to draw. Included are dozens of exercises to help the artist learn by... drawing.

Wow! I have taught drawing on the right side of the brain for over 10 years and this workbook is the BEST! I wish all my students could afford one. I purchased a few of these, and have given them to students who are passionate about learning how to draw...these are junior high students too! I love the simplicity of the lessons, streamlined in such a succinct way...why didn't I think of this for Betty Edwards? If you teach this program or you want to learn to draw or improve your drawing skills, this book is so easy to use, it is so user friendly. I also purchased the DVD which goes beautifully...My students are so at ease with this system of organizing the drawing learning process.

Having given up finding someone with the time to collaborate with the children's books I'd like to write for possible publication, I decided to take a beginning drawing class at the Adult school. Our talented/kind/patient teacher recommended this book. It has been very helpful to me. I never in a million years would have believed that drawing was in my future, but it is and I love it.
